BMW E30 wheel fitment guide — PCD, offset and period-correct wheels
Published July 8, 2026
Wheels change an E30 more than any other single part, and the fitment rules are simple once you know them. This guide covers what bolts on, what to measure, and which period wheels are worth hunting for.
The basics: 4x100 — with one big exception
Every standard E30 — 316 through 325i, Touring and Convertible included — uses a 4x100 bolt pattern with a 57.1mm centre bore. The exception is the E30 M3, which uses 5x120. M3 wheels do not fit a standard E30 and vice versa, no matter how right they look.
Factory E30 wheels run high positive offsets (typically around ET35). Staying near factory offset keeps the steering feel stock and the tyres inside the arches; lower offsets push the wheel outward and can rub on fenders, especially on lowered cars.
Factory wheel styles
Base cars wore 14-inch steel wheels with hubcaps. The alloys most associated with the E30 are the 14-inch "bottlecaps" fitted to later cars and the BBS-made cross-spoke "basketweaves" fitted to sportier models — both light, correct, and increasingly collectable in unkerbed condition. The M3 got its own 15-inch cross-spoke design in 5x120.
Period-correct aftermarket wheels
The E30 era produced some of the most loved road wheels ever made, and a period set finishes a build like nothing else. The classics in 4x100: BBS RS (the three-piece icon), BBS RA and RZ, Alpina's open-lug 16-inch design, plus period pieces from Ronal, ATS, Borbet and Momo. Because these wheels are 30-plus years old, condition is everything — check for kerb damage, straightness, and on multi-piece wheels the state of the bolts and sealing.
When buying used wheels, ask for the stamped size and offset (cast into the back of the spoke or barrel), and confirm the centre bore — many aftermarket wheels use hub rings to adapt a larger bore down to the BMW 57.1mm.
Tyres and sizing
Factory sizing was modest — around 195-section on 14-inch wheels — and the car was geared for it. If you move up to 15s or 16s, pick a tyre that keeps the overall rolling diameter close to stock so the speedometer and gearing stay accurate. Period looks with modern rubber is the sweet spot for a street E30.
